We were tasked with creating a high end online advert for Unique Health & Fitness, a long running and successful grass roots gym in Blackwood, South Wales (UK). The client wanted to show off the unique facilities and diverse space in the gym. We felt this was best told through the experience of regulars and personal trainers at the gym as they experience it. 
We wanted to show the initial struggle of finding motivation to go to the gym at the start, using one of the regulars as a main character that the viewer could identify with. This also acts as a way to show the outside of the gym for anyone looking to visit. 

"It is as much a place for the mind as it is the body."

It was important to convey the level of focus and calm that can be felt at the gym. It's not just a place to train your body, but somewhere a person can release any inner tension and reconnect with themselves. So I worked closely with the talented performers to ensure they understood the mindset throughout.
We wanted to show the various sections of the gym and specific exercises that used the variety of machines at the gym. We aimed to show preparation, the details of both performer and equipment, as well as the ​full range of movement of the man or woman working out. 

"Lighting was an important element of the shoot."

We used it to create an atmosphere and a sense of depth in the images. Working closely with the Director of Photography (Oliver Biggs) we established a look and feel in detail before hand. Many of the shot ideas happened organically on set during takes, such as capturing natural moments between the two performers or synchronising certain camera movements with that of the exercise being performed. 
Throughout the editing process it was important for me to seamlessly connect each scene, flowing through movements and sending a message that this was a gym that had everything you needed. I used subtle sound effects to connect scenes and to take the viewer into the environment. The colour grade aimed to accentuate skin tones, depth and add an emotional layer to the imagery.

Overall it was incredible shoot and as always, we aimed to keep things professional, but creative, light and friendly. We work hard to create this type of environment so that its an experience everyone involved can remember. I personally love creating these more emotionally engaging films that send a clear message and I had a blast making this piece.
